“Graphic design is a creative position much like writing.”
What do you hope to get out of the new relaunched Media Kitty?
Easier contact with tourism boards, outlets looking for contributors and new travel friends alike.
What is involved in your job day to day?
Blogging, editing content, attending events, press trips and reviewing products like urban-minded tech, travel, and fashion items.
What challenges do you face in your role?
Including return flights for some of the FAM trips I propose to various tourism boards and organizations.
What are the achievements in your job that you are most proud of?
Best Blog at the 2014 Social Media Awards in Victoria, BC, several of my photos purchased by outlets including enRoute Magazine and Luxury Travel Aspen.
What’s the most fun part of your job?
No two days are alike and I get to meet and work with so many different personalities.
What makes you good at what you do?
I’m highly organized and motivated.
What is your number one tip for working more efficiently?
Get your writing done while out on the road! It saves so much time. I work on an iPad and email myself documents every time I’ve done a major revision or addition. When I’m back home I can simply open the most recent email of the bunch and get right into final edits as well as selecting my photos.
In your work background, how did you progress to your current role?
I started as a graphic designer, spent most of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games attending media functions and later realized how driven I was to write and photograph my experiences. My design site soon morphed into my blog Vancouverscape.com.
In what ways does your job differ now from when you started out in your profession?
Graphic design is a creative position much like writing and photography, but instead of presenting work to clients, I’m working with PR firms and tourism bureaus.
What advice would you give someone starting out in your profession?
Keep at it and be consistent with blogging.
What inspired you to work in this area?
An undying love for travel.
What are your interests outside of work?
Travel, music, kayaking and getting out on a walk to keep the heart pumping while freeing my mind of distractions during the day.
What is your favourite travel destination?
Anywhere there’s good snorkeling!
What is your top travel tip?
Bring a pillowcase to tuck a down jacket into for a super soft pillow on flights and/or long road trips.
What is your special talent?
Capturing the essence of my storytelling through photography.
